Erythritol is a sugar alcohol, a type of sugar substitute. It occurs naturally in mushrooms, fermented foods and various fruits, such as grapes, melons and pears, and it is also found in supplement form as a crystalline powder, as well as the fermentation of corn starch.
Is it natural?
Yes, it is. Not all polyols are natural. Some are synthetic and present in many prossed foods.
Erythritol is not considered an artificial sweetener. Nor is it a man-made sugar alcohol; it’s produce by natural means: the fermentation of corn starch.
If you like the fact that stevia is natural but don’t like it’s bitter aftertaste, then you’ll appreciate erythritol. That’s because it has no aftertaste.
Erythritol has been as tooth-friendly. The sugar alcohol cannot be metabolized by oral bacteria, and so does not contribute to tooth decay. Interestingly, Erythritol exhibits some, but not all, of Xylitol’s tendency to “starve” harmful bacteria. Unlike Xylitol, Erythritol is actually absorbed into the bloodstream after consumption but before excretion.
A new study from The Netherlands says Erythritol may exert a strong antioxidant activity which may protect vascular health of diabetics.
Some possible traditional uses of Erythritol may include:
- Clean taste like regular sugar (about 80% as sweet as sugar) without the negative effects
- Does not promote tooth decay
- Zero calorie
- Safe for people with diabetes (0 on the glymic scale)
- Clean sweet taste with no aftertaste
- Low laxative effect
- Possibly reducecing the glymic impact of a food/beverage, thereby reducecing the effects of hyperglymia-indud Free radical formation
- Protecting the lls lining the blood vessels from oxidative stress.
- The way these molecules are structured gives them the ability to stimulate the sweet taste reptors on your tongue.
- Erythritol appears to be quite different from the other sugar alcohols.
It contains much fewer calories:
Table sugar: 4 calories per gram
Xylitol: 2.4 calories per gram
- Erythritol: 0.24 calories per gram
- Overall, erythritol appears to be an exllent sweetener.
- It contains almost no calories.
- It has 70% of the sweetness of sugar.
- It doesn’t raise blood sugar or insulin levels.
- Human studies show very few side effects, mainly minor digestive issues in some people.
