The Overgaauw Stellenbosch Merlot is a significant wine with aninteresting history, stemming from South Africa's first bottled singlevarietal Merlot. The story behind it dates back to 1973 when the Merlotvines were found to be infected by leafroll virus. This led to theacquisition of healthy virus free vines from Italy, which were plantedin 1979. The first vintage from this block was produced by Braham vanVelden in 1982, and the wine was so impressive that he deemed it worthyto be bottled on its own, making it the first single varietal Merlot onthe market. Overgaauw Wine Estate, the home of South Africa's firstMerlot, has dedicated itself to crafting this noble variety for overfive decades.
