Gesso plays a key role in the artistic process in that it primes the artists' substrate or working surface, making it slightly textured and ready for painting. Gesso, although similar to white acrylic paint, is thinner and hard-drying, making the substrate more stiff. Without gesso, paint would soak into the pores of the substrate. Primes surfaces for acrylic or oil painting, with a clear matte finish and slight tooth. Apply in layers as necessary.
